Description
The brewery straddles the Belgian/Dutch border so during Nazi occupation the Germans observed proper protocol and only occupied the bits of the brewery in Belgian territory!
Achel was only founded in 1998 but the abbey has a brewing history that stretches all the way back to 1648.
This Bruin (Dubbel) has a dark amber to brown hue and a strong offwhite head that smells of dark fruits. The body is appropriately thin, a side effect of using “candi” sugar to make the beer brown and boost the alcohol content. Phenolic flavours from the yeast are prevalent flavours; pepper and clove with a bit of pear/banana as well as hints dark dried fruits. This complex beer finishes nice and dry.
